Upper Rhine
Basel downstream to Mainz — Switzerland, France, Germany
A straightened, canalised river running through the flat rift valley between the Vosges and the Black Forest. The interest here is the cities and the country on either bank — Basel, Strasbourg, Speyer — rather than the riverscape itself, which is engineered and largely uniform.
Navigation: Locks are concentrated on this stretch: the barrages between Basel and Iffezheim regulate the river, and vessels transit several of them. Below Iffezheim the Rhine runs free.
